How to Become a Nail Technician in Florida

If you have ever thought about becoming a nail technician, you might be surprised at how achievable that goal actually is.

A lot of people assume beauty school takes years, but in Florida the pathway to becoming a licensed nail technician is much more focused. With the right training and the right environment, many students are able to start their career in the nail industry faster than they expected.

At The Academy of Nail Careers in Sanford, Florida, we guide students through every step so they graduate feeling confident in their skills and ready to begin building their clientele.

Here is how the process works.

Step 1: Complete a Nail Specialist Program

In the state of Florida, becoming a licensed nail technician requires completing a minimum of 180 hours in a Nail Specialist program at a licensed beauty school.

During this training students learn the core foundations of professional nail services. This includes topics such as sanitation and infection control, nail anatomy, manicure and pedicure techniques, acrylic nail application, gel polish services, and electric filing.

At The Academy of Nail Careers, our Nail Specialist Program is structured as a 240 hour program. We intentionally go beyond the state minimum so students have more time to practice, refine their techniques, and gain real hands-on experience before entering the industry.

Students learn through a combination of classroom instruction, demonstrations, and working with real clients in a supervised student salon environment.

Step 2: Apply for Your Florida Nail Specialist License

Once you complete your program hours, your school will submit proof of training so you can apply for your license through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

One thing that surprises many people is that Florida does not require a state board exam for nail specialists. Licensing is based on completing your approved hours and submitting your application.

Once your license is approved, you are officially able to begin working as a nail technician in Florida.

Why Your Training Environment Matters

While Florida only requires 180 hours, the environment where you learn can make a huge difference in how prepared you feel once you graduate.

At The Academy of Nail Careers in Sanford, our focus is on helping students build a strong foundation. We emphasize professionalism, sanitation, technical skill, and real client experience.

Students are supported by instructors who are active in the industry and passionate about helping the next generation of nail technicians succeed.
